The Multiplayer Online Battle Arena or MOBA is a gaming phenomenon unlike any other in my memory. As a genre it's uniqueness lies in its rise to prominence globally in such a short time span and yet it seems from the outside looking in to be an incredibly bounded, exclusive community. More specifically, the two major competing titles within the space, League of Legends (LOL) and Defense of the Ancients (DOTA 2), offer gameplay experiences of a similar nature, yet their respective communities couldn't be further apart. With a rigid overarching superstructure that unites both titles from a mechanical standpoint, the two titles share much in common. And yet there is something, some intangible quality which divides the two massive communities. Could it be the way the games are marketed towards their respective audiences? Or perhaps it lies within the communities themselves, somewhere in between the casual and professional players. These are elements I will endeavor to explore to the fullest extent and to answer if possible in order to answer my ultimate question: Just what is it that divides these two fan communities with games that share so much in common?
